Foreigners in Bor have to pay for new labour card

December 7, 2011 (BOR) – Authorities in Jonglei state have ask all foreigners residing in Bor town to register for a public service card to enable them to perform their duties freely.

The director of Labour and Industrial and Relations in the ministry of Public services and Human Resource Development, Paul Panchol, said the Labour Card will be limited for one year only.

All foreign workers and their businesses registered by Ministry of Public Services and Labour will be protected, he said.

So, far 112 people foreigners have registered for the card, which costs 50 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) and lasts for a year.

However, the chairman of Uganda Community in Bor, Juuko Godfrey, said that government of Jonglei has undermined their businesses.

He said foreign workers should not have to pay for a card as many of them do not earn high salaries working in hotels and driving taxis. He urged the state government to consider them as part of Bor community, saying that they were already subjected to high taxes.

Godfrey said Bor county has over 400 foreigners serving in various businesses.

“We need the government of this state also to consider [the] nature of [the] work that we do. We get little income money and [the] immigration department is taking a lot of money from us.

“Now [the] government [has] created [a] so called Labour Card for getting money from our pocket again” said Godfrey.

This is the first time Public Service ministry has issued Labour Cards to foreigners in Jonglei.

You reap what you sow, the Bible says,

Treat Ugandans nice, they treat you friends and relatives in Kampala well.

Foreigners, especially Ethiopians and Ugandans deserve right treatment because we are or were guests in their countries at one time or another?

They should pay taxes as the law requires, but deserve protection not looting.
