Eritrea: UN sanctions further exacerbates tension in East Africa

By Tesfa-Alem Tekle

December 7, 2011 (ADDIS ABABA) – Eritrea warned that new UN sanctions imposed Monday will further aggravate conflict and instability to the already volatile Horn of African region.

“The resolution is another injustice on the Eritrean people and will heighten tensions and stoke an already explosive situation in the Horn of Africa,” the Eritrean Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

“The peoples of Eritrea, Ethiopia and the region will undoubtedly pay the price for this continued misguided policy, but the Eritrean people will prevail, as they prevailed in the past” the statement added.

The UN Security Council on Monday imposed additional sanctions against Eritrea in response to its continued destabilising role in east Africa.

The Eritrean government further attacked the United States saying the global super power was behind initiating the new UN measures.

“The sanctions were the result of undisguised United States hostility towards Eritrea,” said the Eritrean government

“It was an attempt by the U.S. administration to scapegoat Eritrea for its faulty and failed policies in the Horn of Africa.”

The UN action against Eritrea follows after five countries in the region on Monday appealed on the UN Security Council to place further tougher sanctions on Eritrea to stop Eritrea from further destabilising the African region.

East African countries accuse the government in Asmara of continuing to support al-Qaida-linked extremist groups in Somalia and other armed groups seeking to destabilise region.

Asmara denies all allegations from its neighbours and says the accusations are anti-Eritrea campaigns led by Ethiopia.

Speaking to AFP, Ethiopian foreign affairs spokesman Dina Mufti however welcomed the new measures.

“This country, Eritrea, the leadership is a source of instability for the region so everyone is concerned,” Dina said adding “IGAD is concerned, the AU is concerned and the international community is concerned.”

Eritrea, gained independence in 1993 from Ethiopia after a bitter conflict for secession but later engaged in a 1998-2000 bloody border war which killed some 70,000 people.

It is true for Ethiopian priminster to tell what has been seen by all African and the world.Eriteria is an East African country which is jeoleously confused by its president supporting muslim terorrist.Isayas Afriwarki is a best friend to Bashir and other Arab countries.
If Eriteria is still in conflict with Ethiopia,Why not make a relation with other African countries then in relation with Bashir
