Athor’s S. Sudan rebels threaten to capture Jonglei’s capital

December 11, 2011 (JUBA) – George Athor Deng, leader of a South Sudanese rebel group, on Sunday threatened to capture Bor, the capital of Jonglei state if an agreement is not reached with the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) before the end of 2011.

After the failure of secret talks with the South Sudan government in Nairobi last November, Athor already vowed more violence in the newly independent country saying Juba is not willing to reach peace.

The renegade general who rebelled after declared loser of gubernatorial elections in April 2010 asks to hold new general elections in the country, and to form an national interim government to organize these elections.

He also demands financial compensation for the families affected by the fight between his group and the national army and says foreign mediators are necessary to guarantee the implementation of any deal.

“All options are with the other party,” Athor told Sudan Tribune on Sunday. He also explained that the rebels “are committed to negotiating peaceful settlement of the conflict”.

“The whole South Sudan is fighting the government in Juba because corruption and crimes against humanity are increasing. People continue to disappear in Juba on daily basis without reason by the same people in power,” further said Athor.

He claimed his forces attacked a number of SPLA controlled towns within the vicinity of Bor on Sunday and that he has received reports indicating 41 SPLA soldiers were killed, four captured and several wounded.

On Sunday SPLA spokesperson, Phillip Aguer, confirmed to Sudan Tribune reports of fighting in Jonglei but said he did not know who was involved in the attack.

A statement released by the Atar community of Jonglei on Sunday also confirmed reports of fighting in Jonglei, claiming that Bumas, Wun-kiir Anyang, Ayol-yol (Wun-Mijak) and Patang were attacked, cattle stolen and a number of villages burnt. It also claimed fighting in Pachot, in the far west of Atar is ongoing.

The attack came after the rebel group last week called on the local population and the international humanitarian organisations to leave strategic areas in Jonglei.

The Atar community statement describes the “continuous butchering of the innocent civil population since the attempted massacre of the 16 November 2011,” by Athor’s forces in Atar.

The release also calls upon the UN Mission in South Sudan to investigate atrocities allegedly committed in the recent attacks by Athor’s forces, ”in which three civilians were shot dead in their tukuls [traditional homes] at midnight, two police men wounded and dozens of herds of cattle raided.”

I am worrying about those blind people who are with George Athor plus other militia. Why are some people are so stupid like this!

They will not get anything from their useless fight perhaps the cattle and grains that they always loot from civilians are going to be their success.

Dumb people can not listen by peaceful advise unless by the way he wants. I want SPLA to catch all these militia.

Psychological warfare at its best, Athor is clearly under pressure to pen a deal with GOSS ASAP, he seems to have hit the panic button already!. Everyone is signing a deal with the GOSS, Liam has, Gadet has so Athor is worried because he isolated. he is like “shit im the only one left in the jungle, I better make up they might catch my ass” Just surrender mr traitor.

I didn’t expects such move from Athor Deng. He is an elder and mature enough know everything and unfortunately opted to do something I never knew should involve Athor himself. What goes around come around, he may be doing it hoping it’ll not gonna affects him sometime later but that’s the lie. Your crime will kill you. The name of rebel is not known, vision is invisible, no objective of struggle,

Aguer, why commenting in the first place if you did not know who attacked who? You don’t have a phrase” I can not comment in your vocabulary”? This phrase is usually used when you don’t have sufficient informaton about the matter for your information so not to portray your being ignorant about recent developments with regards to the matter in question. You are ashamed to the army indeed.

Dear brothers and sisters, I donot understand why we talk nonsense when we know that this is a pure pathetic failure of the State and Juba’s government. The government has miserably fail its citizens and this should not be blamed on who chose to rebel. Kiir’s government has openly neglects the people of South Sudan and there is no way we should be saying so and so did or didn’t. amnesty is loose.

That was what Happen exactly with Kuanyin Bol and I think Athor will simply be killed like a dog, Look at idiot statement that he wanted his people to be compensated meanwhile he is still killing more people in his home state of Jonglei which he may again claim for compensation. He is trying to collect money for compensation and use it for his personal interest, No peace with him this time man!

Puok, there should be no pardon for those who have no regard for human lives. What I think is giving criminals room to continue to act ruthlessly is the approach Juba has taken plus the fact that Kiir does not care much about protecting civilians other than being busy signing contracts with foreign countries in Juba. If Juba took serious measures to deal with rebels, Athor would ve been dealt with

TO GEORGE ATHOR: You have destroyed yourself, for the legacy you will leave behind is not something that the future generations of South Sudan will want to emulate; forming a rebel group after losing your first electiong is not something that any wise leader, who care about his people would do. Therefore, the atrocities you have committed will haunt your posterity for you will die a sad man.

TO SALVA KIIR & ROSS: You are busy signing contracts and building new cities, yet you have neglected the plights of the citizens of South Sudan. Why do talk behind close doors with the rebels? Why don’t you let the people of South Sudan know what when on between you and the rebels? IT IS IN YOUR INTEREST, AS LEADERS, TO END THESE CONFLICTS IN PEACEFUL WAY; NO DEVELOPMENT WHERE THERE IS WAR.

TO THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH SUDAN: It is about time you start thinking about your own future and the future of your children, and grandchildren instead of look upto the leaders for guidance and solutions. Most of them are too busy enjoying themselves that death of 40 people, displacement of 1000s or starvation of hundreds don’t disturb their sleep. They take these as just another casaulty of war.

I am really sorry for Athor resistence, I thought Athor would have listened to his people, Southern Sudanese who have been asking him kindly to comeback and settle himself in the gov. system. I have been his fan since 1990s when he resisted NIF and Faction groups of Southern Sudan who were surrending him with civilians and very few soliders and few ammuntions in his hand.
I know that he is angry-

    — He is angry with Koul Mayang, but that is a part of politic. When somebody comes to politic, he/she always expects disappointment in any corner in politic.Southerners knew your rights during that election, but give us chance to sort it out for you through political democracy ways. It is not necessarily for u to pick up arms and kill us while you were aiming to be elected for us.
