South Sudan probes death threats against a journalist
December 12, 2011 (JUBA) — The government of South Sudan on Monday said it has started investigating reports alleging death threats to a journalist who wrote an article critical to the wedding of a daughter of the President to a foreign national.
Mustafa Biong Majak, a director General at the ministry of information and broadcasting service on Monday said his ministry takes the issue more seriously and would work closely with other relevant authorities including security organs to establish facts and instigating causes of threats.
“The ministry has received a complaint about a threat targeting one of the journalist. We also saw reports in the media about the same issue and we have heard a case has been opened against the suspects”, Majak told Journalists at the premises of the ministry on Monday.
The senior official assured journalists that his ministry has already taken steps to investigate the allegation. “I would like to inform you that we have already started working together with security forces. We are coordinating with the police especially criminal department unit and the National Security.”
Mustafa stressed that security organs are probing the case already without elaborating on their findings.
Last week Dengdit Ayok, a journalist with the Destiny newspaper opened a court case after receiving a threat in two separate emails by people he said were known to him because of an article criticising the wedding of South Sudan President to a foreign national.
Ayok, and Ngor Arol, the editor-in-chief of the daily, were arrested in November by the internal National Security agency and released without charges. The article generated a lot of reactions that prompted Akol Koor Kuc, Director General of the National Intelligence and Security Service for internal affairs to suspend the paper.
The emails of threat were signed by the names of Akol Kiir Kuc and Bang W Kiir, both are known relatives of the head of security apparatus.
