2.7 million South Sudanese need food aid in 2012

December 15, 2011 (JUBA) – The UN World Food Programme (WFP) on Thursday said it is seeking US$92 million to feed over 2.7 million people in need of food aid in South Sudan.

In a statement released on Thursday, the UN food agency attributed the food shortage to crop failures and violence.

Although blessed with natural resources, South Sudan is struggling to build institutions, end tribal and rebel violence and overcome an economic crisis. It imports much of its food from the neighbouring countries including Sudan, but trade across the border has been disrupted.

Also the WFP is estimated that 400,000 people displaced by conflict in Sudan are also putting pressure on South Sudan, where some are seeking refuge.

The agency further underlined that unreliable rains have also caused food prices to spiral upwards in recent months.

“A gathering storm of hunger is approaching South Sudan, caused by crop failure and market disruption,” WFP country director Chris Nikoi said in a statement.

Resources are also being stretched an influx of 350,000 South Sudanese returning home following independence in July.

WFP and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation estimate that South Sudan will have a shortfall of 400,000 metric tons of food in 2012.

Inflation climbed to 78.8 percent in November in the country of 8.3 million people.
“Food prices have already doubled or tripled in some areas, leaving hundreds of thousands of children vulnerable to malnutrition at a key developmental stage of their young lives,” Nikoi said.

Relations between Juba and Khartoum have soured in recent weeks as talks over post-independence issues such as oil, debt; arrears, disputed areas and transitional financial assistance have broken down.

Both Juba and Khartoum regularly trade accusations and denials of supporting insurgencies in each other’s country.

Conflict, growing insecurity, including the laying of land mines by rebel groups, and poor road infrastructure are hindering access for humanitarian operations, WFP added.
