Rebels warn US companies against investment in South Sudan

December 15, 2011 (LONDON) – Rebels operating predominantly in Unity state of South Sudan have issued a statement warning US companies considering investing in the country that their safety cannot be assured until the current president, Salva Kiir, is removed from power.
The statement was released on the eve of Kiir’s trip to the US where he attended the International Engagement Conference for South Sudan in Washington on Wednesday. Kiir spoke to potential investors and politicians about improved governance in South Sudan.
The SSLM/SSDM statement also claims their forces are “advancing towards Bor town and will also attack Bentiu town in a week”.
The rebel spokesperson, Bapiny Monytuil, told Sudan Tribune on Thursday “Chepron [Chevron] and Haliburton oil companies signed deals with South Sudan government in September to take part in oil exploration in Unity State. The SSLA is fighting in Unity State and yet those companies signed deals to come to Unity State to make business.”
Bapiny also claimed that a coalition of South Sudanese rebel groups will be announced on Saturday.
In light of the fact that investors are likely to source their own security information and therefore unlikely to rely on Kiir’s word the intended audience for the statement is not clear.
When asked, Bapiny said the rebels have a “moral obligation” to the investors and that they “in contact with US State Department and we know that they are frustrated with corruption in Juba .”
The rebels further pledged to intensify their attack during the upcoming period without elaborating.
“We will ensure this month that Salva Kiir will not celebrate Christmas in peace,” claims Bapiny.
The South Sudan authorities refuse to hold talks with the rebels and describe the SSLA as “mercenaries” of Khartoum.
Today, the UN aid food, WFP, warned that some 2.7 million South Sudanese are facing foot shortage in the newly established state, in large in party due to the continued violence in the South Sudan.
