December 18, 2011 (LONDON) – The South Sudanese rebels have successfully aborted an attempt to kill George Athor last Tuesday, claimed a joint statement released today by two armed groups operating in the newly independent state.
The rebel general leads the South Sudan Democratic Movement / Army (SSDM/A), which has formed a coalition with the South Sudan Liberation Movement / Army (SSLM/A). The rebel rhetoric and attacks, predominantly on South Sudan army positions in Unity state, have been intensifying since October.
in a joint statement issued on Sunday, the two rebel groups claimed that South Sudanese government agents, a man dressed as a priest and two women dressed as deacons, attempted to kill Athor at the SSDA headquarters in Pigi county, Jonglei state on Tuesday 13 December.
On 9 December and after Athor’s return from Nairobi, “a man claiming to be a priest of Anglican Church” contacted the rebel demanding to meet the rebel leader to discuss issues of peace. The Church had already tried to broker a deal between the two parties in the past.
The rebels claimed that once the religious delegation arrived to the headquarters they discovered that the two women were concealing pistols in their underwear, after a their return from a latrine inside the residence of the rebel leader.
Under interrogation the trio admitted to being “sent by Salva Kiir to assassinate George Athor”. The man allegedly admitted to being a member the South Sudanese military intelligent and the women confessed to being trained for six months in Magwi county, Central Equatoria state, to carry out the assassination, the rebel further alleged.
The renegade general posed last November four conditions for any peace agreement with his former comrades in the South Sudan ruling party, the SPLM.
He asks to hold new general elections in South Sudan, to be organised by an interim government including the opposition forces. His groups should get “two or three” portfolios in this cabinet. He also demands financial compensations for the population of the area where his group is based.
The rebels claim they will hold a tribunal in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to decide the fate of the foiled assassins.
The success of Kiir’s offer of an amnesty to the country’s rebels at the independence of South Sudan on 9 July address has been limited.
The SSLA, under the leadership of James Gai Yoach, distanced themselves from their former leader, Peter Gatdet, who signed a peace agreement in Juba in August.
Former rebel leader, Gatluak Gai, was killed in July, days after signing a peace deal. The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) denied the SSLA’s claims of their involvement in his killing.
The South Sudan army spokesperson has described the SSLA as Khartoum’s “mercenaries”.
In October the Small Arms Survey found evidence in weapon seizures which could implicate Khartoum in the Unity state rebels.
