Sudan upgrading airbase in North Kordofan
January 2, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese defense minister Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein inspected an airbase in North Kordofan and pledged to upgrade its capabilities and prepare it for a more advanced role.
Hussein toured the Sheikan airbase and queried officials there on what is missing that prevents it from carrying out its functions more effectively.
The top military official said the airbase represents a “strategic depth” and that it will become the permanent headquarters of fighter jets, transport aircrafts and maintenance centers.
He also got acquainted with the security situation in the state and expressed satisfaction with the procedures undertaken by the various agencies there to enhance security.
This week a military helicopter crashed in the capital of the state killing all those on board which included six crewmen carrying ammunition supplies.
The chopper encountered a technical failure three minutes after takeoff causing a fire on board which forced the pilot to seek an emergency landing in a square near the airport. The Sudanese army denied any foul play was involved.
Since June 2010 Sudanese army has been fighting the Sudan People Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N) in South Kordofan. Sudan accused its neighbour South Sudan of supporting the rebels but Juba has denied the charge.
