Dr. Seifu, 46, was reportedly shot dead by unknown killers at the gate of his house in the Malakia area, on the outskirts Juba, the South Sudan capital. The killers, according to eye witnesses, made off with his car and other personal belongings.

The deceased’s car, Sudan Tribune understands, was later recovered on Sunday afternoon along the Juba-Yambio road with one occupant, who is said to be in Police custody.

An AMREF statement posted on its website, on 16 January, said it was deeply shocked at the death of its South Sudan Director, saying the organisation is ready to stand in solidarity with his family during this sad moment.

The organisation also urged its South Sudanese staffs to remain calm and all efforts are underway to strengthen security measure for all AMREF staff worldwide.

“This is a very sad moment for the entire AMREF family and we stand in solidarity with Alemayehu’s family and AMREF South Sudan staff during this very difficult moment,” said AMREF’S Director General, Dr. Teguest Guerma.

“We are working with the government of South Sudan on the matter to handle the situation and will keep you informed as we receive more information.”

A holder of a Masters in Public Health, Dr. Seifu was appointed AMREF Country Director in South Sudan in January 2011, after serving as Deputy Country Director in Ethiopia, a position he held since September 2007.

Prior to joining AMREF the Ethiopian medical doctor worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) as regional surveillance coordinator in their Ethiopia Country Office, CARE International and Amhara Regional Health Bureau, Ethiopia.

AMREF has assigned Dr. Joseph Lipua, South Sudan Programme Manager, to take over the office, as arrangements are made to appoint an acting Country Director.
