Jonglei state minister call for equal participation for women in government
January 26, 2012 (JUBA) – The Jonglei state minister of labour, public services and human resources; Rachael Nyadak Paul, has appealed to South Sudan constitutional review committee to consider the rights of women, widows, orphans children and the disabled people during the process.
Nyadak noted that there is not enough representation for women in the South Sudanese government.
The Lakes state advisor for gender and human rights, Adak Costa Mapuor, urged South Sudanese women to demand their rights are duly considered in the new constitution, before the review process is completed.
Costa also called for a “gender sensitive” constitution which tackles the issues of property ownership and marriageable age for women – both inadaquetly dealt with in the interim constitution.
On Wednesday a South Sudanese women’s alliance said the National Constitution Review Commission (NCRC) did not fully represent their interests.
They also called for greater involvement for women in the democratic process of South Sudan.
