Darfur peacekeepers recover carjacked WFP trucks
February 1, 2012(KHARTOUM) – The African Union-United Nation Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said Wednesday that five trucks belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP) were recovered in ?orth Darfur state.
The carjacked convoy of WFP trucks was seized on 30 January 2012 by unknown gunmen between Saraf Umra and Kabkabiya in North Darfur.
The Rwandese peacekeepers based in Kabkabiya escorted the WFP vehicles to El-Fasher after a two-day search and rescue operation, in the area of Guldo in East Jebel Marra, the UNAMID said.
The drivers of the trucks were found unharmed. The perpetrators fled upon the arrival of the peacekeepers. .
Sudan has recently demanded to review the number of troops deployed in Darfur saying the de-escalation of violence and tension allow to cut the number of the troops.
The government its army can not continue to ensure the protection of the UNAMID troops who refuse to use their arms and become easy target for rebel groups to get weapons and ammunitions.
The protection of humanitarian convoys destined to the needy in the region is one of the main tasks of the peacekeeping mission which is established by the end of 2007 to protect civilians affected by the war between the government and rebel groups there since 2003.
