Chinese leader meets special envoy of Sudan President

BEIJING, June 11, 2004 (Xinhua) — Senior Chinese leader Wu Bangguo said here Friday that China is glad to see the major progress made in the peace process of Sudan and hopes Sudan will realize sustained peace at the earliest date.

Wu, chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, met with a special envoy of the president of Sudan in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Friday afternoon.

The special envoy Awadh Ahmed al-Gaz, also minister of energy and mining of Sudan, presented Wu with a letter written by President Omar Hassan Ahmed El-Bashir to Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Al-Gaz said the president of Sudan places high importance on his country’s relations with China. The special envoy was entrusted by the president to visit China specially for informing Beijing about the latest development of the peace process in Sudan. He also conveyed the message that Sudan wishes to expand mutually beneficial cooperation with China.
