Lakes state parliament repointed by governor

March 9, 2012 (RUMBEK) – The Governor of Lakes state Chol Tong Mayay have issue two decree, the decree for appointment and decree for convocation reaffirming 46 honorable members into state parliament.

The new decree No.05/2012 appointed Ms. Victoria Achol Akot and Decree No.06/2012 convoke 46 members as well two honorable members could not managed to come back to translational period parliament.

Out of 46 members in Lakes state parliament, only two members could not manage to come back into new phase of parliament due to some reasons.

Ex-Hon. Zecheria Puoric Matoung, a member of SPLM representing Matagai payam in Rumbek Central County who was convicted in civil county court over child abduction case and late Hon. Stephen Matoc Dut, SPLM member, representing Rumbek North county who was elected in 2010 Sudan general election died last year, both could not managed to be reappointed by state governor decree.

Lakes state parliament is having 47 members. Only two are an independent candidate from Wulu County of Lakes state located at Southern part of Rumbek, the capital of Lakes state. The majority of MPs are SPLM members with fully presentation of 25% of women seat in state parliament.

Addressing the gather crow of people in Lakes state parliament Governor Chol Tong Mayay said that “this ceremony is a landmark in our history because, by it, this August House and its members have become an integral component of the Transitional period of the independent nation of South Sudan; a period that requires our cohesiveness and collective action to achieve our stated commitment to the principles of good governance, democracy, transparency, respect for the rule of law, equality and justice which constitute the pillars of a strong foundation for the development and prosperity of all nations”.

He also noted that “a head of us are challenges that require us to maintain this spirit of cohesiveness and unity of purpose. Our people need quality basic services and development. They need peace and security. In this transitional period, census is going to be conducted and promulgation of permanent constitution.

This greatest challenges to these legitimate expectations include the shutdown of oil production and the repeated acts of aggression by the NCP regime in Khartoum aimed at undermining our sovereignty, destruction of the oil fields and forceful reunification of the Sudan.

Locally are, the challenge of broadening our resources base, ensuring its collection and deposition into the government accounts and, the stabilization of the security situation; all of which we can jointly achieve”.

Governor Chol, urge members of the two pillars of government to resort to dialogue and consensus rather than discord and controversy to resolve our differences. There is always room for correction and agreement. Let us utilize our caucuses to provide effective coordination and understanding between the two bodies.

However, the SPLM Lakes state act secretary for state Malou Moses Majok, urge state lawmakers to rally behind the SPLM objective and principal to promote the cultural value of South Sudan despite their pary affiliation.

“Yes, I can say that his house is 98% SPLM members not forgetting the two independent who were from SPLM also, I hope you will be doing the work of the people as one body doing one thing for the people of Lakes state” said Moses.

John Marik Makur, the speaker of Lakes state Legislative Assembly, ensured that lawmakers of Lakes state will stood together with state executive to deliver the promises of election made in 2010 election campaign trail.

“this assembly with her new mandate for being sworn in today, will carryout it mandate based on constitution – today is beginning for the new era for translational constitution period – we have to renew our attitude” said speaker Makur.
