S. Sudan higher education committee assesses private and foreign universities

March 23, 2012 (BENTIU) – A committee from the higher education ministry, tasked with assessing private and foreign universities in South Sudan is currently in Unity state.

The committee is assessing Lich university in Benitu, the state capital. Then will then travel to Upper Nile, Unity and Jonglei states.

Included in the committee are Vivian Kakuli Aggrey, chairperson and advisor in the ministry of higher education science and technology; Aleu Garang from the ministry of justice; and Benjamin Gabriel Apai, director general of external relations for the ministry of education, science and technology.

Kakuli told Voice of America radio in Lich university on Thursday that for a university to be recognised in South Sudan it must meet specific criteria including having a permanent building and qualified lecturers.

A student in the university’s human resources and industrial relations department, Thor Dak Khoak, said he was pleased that the committee are carrying out their assessments as it will instil students with confidence with their institutions.

A student from the faculty of accounting and finance, Peter Zimzim Desh, urged citizens to remain in the state for their education.
