SAF warplanes bomb S. Sudan’s Unity State, four injured

April 10, 2012 (JUBA) — Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) reportedly carried out fresh attacks in Abiemnhom town, Unity State, injuring four civilians, including a child, officials told Sudan Tribune on Tuesday.

The spokesperson for the South Sudan government said the attack initially targeted a strategic bridge in Abiemnhom, which is situated west of Mayom town. Similar attacks reportedly occurred on Tuesday, with no reports on casualties yet.

“The Republic of South Sudan condemns the bombardment of innocent civilians and calls on Sudan to immediately withdraw from the sovereign territory of South Sudan,” Barnaba Benjamin Marial told reporters in the capital, Juba.

Marial urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), African Union and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to condemn Khartoum’s act of violation on South Sudan’s airspace, which he said is contrary to international principles.

Khartoum said recently that Sudanese rebels backed by Juba government have been massing troops in the Unity State to attack the oil rich Helglig area in South Kordofan.
