Ethiopia rejects the candidature of the new Sudanese ambassador

KHARTOUM, June 15, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — A new deterioration in the bilateral relations between Addis Ababa and Khartoum has occurred recently when Ethiopian government rejected the candidature of the new Sudanese ambassador to Ethiopia.

According to Paris based weekly newsletter TTU, the Ethiopian government has rejected the candidature of Serageldin Hamed as Sudanese ambassador to Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian authorities invoked that Hamed has been involved in the assassination attempt of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in June 1995.

The name of Hamed had already been mentioned in the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993 when he was at Sudan’s embassy in Washington. He was declared persona non grata by the American authorities.

Undeclared tension looms over the Ethiopia Sudan relations regarding border dispute.

The Sudan does not appreciate the position of Ethiopia on the border demarcation particularly after the refusal of the Ethiopian government to attend the joint commission agreed upon to deal with the border dispute.

The Ethiopian government avoids negotiations over the subject because it disagree with Sudan on the delimitation of the border, sources revealed.

The current Sudanese ambassador to Ethiopia -Sayed Fadal El-Seed has been in office since 1989.
