Khartoum accuses South Sudan of compensating internal failure with war against north

April 27, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Two Sudanese officials accused South Sudan on Friday of failing to govern its territories and attempting to export its problems to the north.

Ahmad Haroun, the governor of South Kordofan State on the borders with South Sudan, said in an interview with Sudan radio that the government in Juba had neglected southern citizens, citing reports of inter-communal violence in South Sudan.

In order to escape its own problems and tighten grip on internal front, Haroun said, the government of South Sudan portrayed the north as an enemy and a threat to their independence.

Speaking on the same program, Sudan’s defence minister urged the international community to pay attention to southern citizens who, he said, are suffering from poverty and starvation as its government continues to direct all of resources “to execute war agendas targeting the government in Khartoum.”

“What does an ordinary southern citizen benefit from toppling the regime in Khartoum?” he asked before accusing Israel of providing military support to Juba.

Hussein reiterated Khartoum’s accusations that Juba was supporting “mercenaries” to fight on its behalf, in reference to Darfur rebel groups and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army North (SPLM-N).

South Sudan denies any links with Sudanese rebel and also accuses Khartoum of supporting rebels on southern territories.

Sudan and South Sudan are both facing an economic crisis due to the repercussions of their dispute over oil exports.

The already underdeveloped south lost over 90 percent of revenues when it shut down oil production in February while Khartoum’s already strained situation is made worse by the disruption of oil pumped from Heglig area following its brief occupation by South Sudan two weeks ago.
