Sudan’s NCP hails meeting with DUP
May 16, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) welcomed the outcome of a meeting that took place yesterday with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) amid growing discontent within the latter about its marginal role in the broad-based government formed last December.
Sources told Sudan Tribune that al-Mirghani conveyed to Yusuf his assertions that they have no plans to withdraw from the government despite calls from within the DUP to the contrary.
Many in the opposition party argue that the NCP does not consult with them in the decision making process and is not implementing their partnership agreement in good faith. From the start, the DUP’s move to join the government drew widespread anger within the party’s base and some of al-Mirghani’s own aides.
The NCP spokesperson Badr al-Deen Ahmed Ibrahim said that they were able to resolve many issues with the DUP and have now turned a new page in their relationship.
He warned opposition parties placing their bets on mobilising people to take the street and oust the regime that they are engaging in an unpatriotic act.
Ibrahim added that the people can differentiate between the regime and the country, which they consider a red line because they enjoy a high level of awareness.
