12 children die of malaria in remote area of Lakes State
June 17, 2012 (RUMBEK) – The member of parliament representing Awerial County at the Lakes State Legislative Assembly representing has reported that 12 children died of Malaria last week in the Bunagok district.
Taban Abel Aguek told Sudan Tribune that three to four children were dying everyday from daily of malaria in places like Bunagok, Jarweng, Pap, Alel and Abuyung. A medical centre run by Italian charity the Comitato di Collaborazione Medica in Bunagok is “almost helpless”, the MP said.
“Some children are dying even when they have arrived in the hospital and many more in the village.”
In four days from 11 to 14 June, serious Malaria, lack of clean water and medicine led to the deaths of 12 children, Aguek said.
“This is serious situation and I need state government to help this children.”
However, Lakes State’s Minister of Health, Daniel Gumwel Nhomabur, said that his ministry has not received any reports of children dying in the remote county. He said that his ministry is in contact with the national ministry of health in Juba on how drugs could be transported to remote counties within the week.
The Government of South Sudan (GoSS) national ministry of health in Juba told Nhomabur “that they had contracted company to transport medicine to state headquarters but until now I do not know the name of company being contracted by GOSS nor the date that medicine will reach Lakes state.”
Nhomabur said that his ministry plans to provide all of Lakes State’s remote counties with medicine.
