Students protest for the second day in Sudanese capital
June 18, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Student protests opposing the government austerity plans continued for the second day on Monday in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and its suburbs.
President Omar Al-Bashir announced before the members of the parliament on Monday the main points of drastic measures his government aims to implement.
The austerity plans impact negatively on the living conditions of Sudanese who are already affected by high inflation and the economic crisis which hit the country after the loss of South Sudan oil revenue.
Police forces used tear gas to disperse protests that erupted for the second day in the University of Khartoum and near the girl compounds located near the campus.
Other protests calling for the downfall of the regime were organised in Kober suburb in Khartoum North and in Omdurman.
Eye witnesses reported sound of gunfire, while unconfirmed reports speak about injuries among the demonstrators.
On the other hand, different sources in the capital confirmed the arrest of dozens of protesters the destruction of two buses owned by Khartoum state transport company, in Kalaklla, a suburb located in the south of the capital.
