Egypt, Sudan set up new firm to develop Nile navigation course

CAIRO, June 20, 2004 (menareport.com) — Egypt and Sudan have agreed to set up an Egyptian-Sudanese company to develop the Nile River navigation course, said Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Mahmoud Abu Zeid.

He noted that the recent coordination meeting, attended by Sudanese officials, has reviewed the available potentials to the River transport in the two countries, with the goal of boosting bilateral trade as well as developing means of transportation to exchange the commodities and products at the minimal cost.

Meanwhile, work on a road linking Port Sudan and South Egypt’s Aswan will be completed in 22 months, Sudanese Roads Minister Mohamed Tahir Ailla said Friday.

The Sudanese and Egyptian governments will share the cost of the $ 18 million 144-km road on a 50-50 basis. The 12-meter-wide vital coastal road provides political and economic benefits, the Minister said.
