Lakes State’s Cueibet County bans carrying of sticks and spears

June 29, 2012 (RUMBEK) – The Commissioner of Cueibet County in Lakes State, Isaac Mayom Malek, issued an order for his county Wednesday forbidding the carrying of sticks and spears inside the Cueibet town.

Malek’s order also banned people from using playing cards, normally under trees, during working hours, making it a prosecutable offence.

The order aims to encourage young men and elders sitting in public places rather than working. Specifically the commissioner hopes that the ruling will increase agricultural cultivation, as South Sudan is facing a food security crises due to low rains last year the expense of importing goods from neighbouring countries.

The commissioner said that people who don’t work on their farms will be arrested.

Trade with neighbouring Sudan ceased last year before South Sudan’s independence as Khartoum closed the border citing security concerns.

Malek ask County police to use “full force” to them to discipline those who violate the order.

“Those who will violate this order must be discipline according to law” he said.

He also said the will also take measures against those who want to make town as a place for fighting and crime such as robbery and theft.
