Two Jordanian peacekeepers are missing in North Darfur

August 21, 2012 (EL-FASHER) – Two Jordanian peacekeepers have gone missing since Monday in North Darfur state, the hybrid mission in Sudan’s western region said on Tuesday.

The African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in a statement released today announced that two of its peacekeepers disappeared in Kabkabiya, located at 140 klm west of El-Fasher.

Also, in Amman, Jordan, the official news agency reported that two of its military officers are missing in North Darfur since Monday afternoon (16.00pm) local time.

The two officers who are based in the area went with a group of peacekeepers to Kabkabiya market to purchase some supplies for the troops. But they failed to show up at a meeting point after two hours as it had been agreed.

UNAMID said it was investigating the incident with the Sudanese government. The Jordanian authorities were quick to say there are no signs that they were abducted or harmed.

Kabkabiya was known as headquarters of Arab militias which fought in the past besides the Sudanese army against Darfur’s rebel groups. However, they have since distanced themselves from the government saying Khartoum did not honour its pledges.
