Sudan plans to revive industries in the South
KHARTOUM, June 23, 2004 (SUNA) — The Ministry of Industry has devised a plan to revive the stalled industries in the south of the country once a final peace agreement is signed.
The Ministry says the plan also includes an ambitious investment plan to exploit the region’s vast industrial potential.
According to the State Minister of the Industry Ali Ahmed Osman studies have been completed for four industrial projects in the South, with special focus on the Mellut Sugar Plant, which was stalled for so long.
He added that work was underway to finish feasibility studies for another six industrial projects in the South. ”Industry is now on the move in the country, achieving a growth rate of 10 percent,” he maintained.
“We have plans to propagate small and large-scale industries in the South and the other regions of the country (with special attention to the stalled industries) and to attract new investments in this sector,” he said.
He hoped that the new industrial development law, which is now being discussed by industrial chambers and regional governments, could open doors for wider investments in the industry sector.
He, however, warned that any delay in the promulgation and endorsement of this law could slow the current industrial momentum.
