SLM rebels urge U.S. Administration to stop its support to Doha agreement
September 17, 2012 (KHARTOUM) — The rebel Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Al-Nur (SPLM-AW) has urged the U.S. Administration to stop its support to the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) and to back their effort for a comprehensive solution of Sudan’s crises.
Before to meet with the rebel group, the American diplomat was in Darfur where he met officials to discuss the DDPD implementation and a number of humanitarian projects his government is implementing there.
Nimir Abdel Rahman, SLM-AW spokesperson told Sudan Tribune, a high ranking delegation of the rebel group told the US official that Khartoum’s regime remains the source of all the conflicts in country and a comprehensive process leading to replace by a democratic regime is the best solution which can establish a lasting peace in Sudan.
The rebel delegation, further, called on the US administration to stop its support to the Doha agreement because like the past “partial” agreements the deal failed to bring peace in the region and the civilians are subjected to government militia attacks, Nimir stressed.
The Sudanese government and the former rebel Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) signed in July 2011 the DDPD which is a framework agreement that rebel groups can join. The SLM-AW however refused to take part in the process requesting to end violence against civilians and to disarm militias before to engage political talks.
The SLM-AW, SLM-Minni Minnawi and Justice, Equality Movement and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North (SPLM-N) formed last November a rebel alliance aiming to bring down the regime of President Omer Al-Bashir.
The rebel groups members of the Sudanese Revolutionary Front also reject negotiations on the problems of their respective regions in Blue Nile , Darfur and South Kordofan but demand a holistic process to ensure a transition to a democratic regime . They also call to coordinate with the opposition political parties on how to establish a new government in Sudan.
Nimir said the meeting also discussed the mandate of the joint peace keeping operation (UNAMID) and reaffirmed the need to bolster its mandate in a way to better ensure the protection of civilians in Darfur.
He said that Smith condemned the recent attacks carried by the militias against IDPs camps and villages.
The American administration calls on the rebel groups to engage direct talks with the Sudanese government and supports the Doha agreement. Smith during his recent trip to Darfur pledged to support the development projects that will be proposed to donors during the upcoming Doha conference.
