Minnawi’s fighters ambush Sudanese troops in North Darfur

September 19, 2012 (KHARTOUM) — The rebel Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) clashed with the Sudanese army in North Darfur and captured of 12 vehicles, the rebel group claimed

In a statement extended to Sudan Tribune, the rebel group spokesperson Adam Saleh Abkr said they ambushed on Wednesday a Sudanese army convoy heading to Jebel Marra.

He further said their fighters crashed the government forces and the remaining vehicles which escaped the fight returned to Tabet, in North Darfur.

The SLM-MM forces led by Mohamed Harri Cherdgo, “have been able to destroy (SAF) force completely and only a small number of vehicles, fled the field battle and was chased until the outskirts of Tabet,” the statement said.

Sudanese army spokesperson was not reachable for comment on this statement.

Minnawi’s movement signed a peace agreement with the Sudanese government in May 2006 but the group resumed hostilities with Khartoum in 2010 as they disagreement on the implementation of Abuja agreement particularly the security arrangements.

The rebel group did not join the Doha process because Khartoum said they can only negotiate with the SLM-MM the implementation of the signed deal.

In November 2011, the group forged a rebel alliance, Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF), with the SLM-AW, SPLM-North and Justice and Equality Movement.
