Khartoum to conduct thorough investigation over killing of UNAMID soldiers
October 4, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s government announced its intention to conduct a thorough investigation on the attack on a UNAMID patrol soldiers where four Nigerian soldiers were killed and 8 others were injured in El Geneina on Tuesday.
West Darfur authorities and UNAMID failed to identify the assailants who were seemingly determined to kill the peacekeepers as they stormed the patrol from different sides.
The attack triggered a large condemnation from the UN chief Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council as well as the local authorities.
US Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice on Thursday said the 15 member body discussed the attack during a meeting over Sudan and South Sudan, adding that “it’s imperative that the government of Sudan bring those responsible to justice”.
In a statement released on Thursday state minister and head of Darfur peace implementation office Amin Hassan Omer, condemned the attack on the peacekeepers and reaffirmed that investigations have already started and efforts are going on to arrest the perpetrators of the attack.
The statement said the gunmen would be brought to justice immediately after their arrest underscoring the cooperation with the joint peacekeeping operation in this regard.
The government also expressed it deepest condolences to the families of the killed peacekeepers and the members of the hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur.
It also pledged to implement preventive security measures to avoid a repetition of such attack.
