Governors’ forum kicks off in Juba with focus on S. Sudan food security

November 25, 2012 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s ten states governors are converging in the national capital, Juba, for the 2nd Governors Forum 15 months after the country gained its independence from Sudan last year.

The office of the President on Sunday announced the gathering which will begin on Monday and run for four days.

The forum was created to avail an opportunity for the governors and their state governments to share and resolve on issues of importance and concern with the national government. The deliberations always touch on issues of governance, economy, security and development among others.

However, the core discussions for this 2nd forum are expected to dwell on food security and how to promote agricultural activities across the ten states.

South Sudan is dependent on food commodities imported from the neighboring countries including Sudan despite its vast arable land that can produce food to feed its population which is less than 10 million.

The event is organized by the office of the president with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
