Intelligence services of CEN-SAD adopts anti-terrorist measures

TRIPOLI, Libya, June 28, 2004 (PANA) — Heads of intelligence services of
member countries of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-
SAD) have adopted a series of measures to face up to the upsurge
of terrorism and its harmful repercussions on security in the
sub-region, an official source said Monday in Tripoli, the Libyan
capital.

In a statement sent to PANA, the CEN-SAD secretariat indicated
that during a meeting held 26-27 June, participants examined ways
to combat terrorism and undertook a series of deterrent measures
to eradicate this phenomenon.

The statement, which did not give particulars about the measures,
acknowledged that several radical terrorist movements have
emerged in the CEN-SAD space, reiterating the “firm resolve” of
the concerned countries to face up to these movements
representing a destabilisation factor in the sub-region.

According to the source, the meeting produced landmark results,
including the setting up of a strategy aimed at fighting against
terrorism and its repercussions, with the view to safeguarding
peace and the integrity and sovereignty of CEN-SAD member
countries.

The statement further hailed the efforts carried out by the
Libyan leader Moammar Kadhafi for the consolidation of peace and
stability within the CEN-SAD space and throughout the continent,
as well as for the eradication of conflict hotbeds in Africa.

CEN-SAD groups Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic,
Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Liberia,
Libya, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone,
Somalia, Sudan, Togo and Tunisia.
