Two men gunned down in Lakes state
November 28, 2012 (RUMBEK) – Unidentified gunmen has killed two people and stoled their motorbike in Mayom payam [district] of Rumbek North county, Lakes state, on Wednesday.
According to an eyewitness the incident occurred when a group of people created a road block using firewood, which caused two men, travelling by motorbike to sell fish at Rumbek market, to stop, after which the ambush ensued.
“These men are businessmen who used to go to Unity state to buy fish,” said the anonymous eyewitness. The state authorities have been informed about the incident and investigations are underway, he explained.
The commissioner of Rumbek Central county, Abraham Mayen Kuc, said that the bodies were received today with support of local government officials in Rumbek North County and transportation from the UN Mission in South Sudan.
“The two dead bodies were officially handed over to their relatives today – they were two men from Rumbek Centre. One is from the Aliap section and other one is from Panyuon section,” said Kuc.
He explained that the victims were attacked after ten days fishing, approximately 15km from Maper, the county headquarters of Rumbek North, near the river Iga, which joins with another river popular for fishing with the people of Rukmbek county of Lakes state and neighbouring Unity state.
“At around 2.00am, the two men passed through Malek, coming from Iga river which is around 15km from Maper centre […] they were gunned down and their motorcycle has been taken away,” said Kuc.
“I warn the population of Rumbek Centre that there are people in the bush […] security forces are searching the suspects,” he added.
