S. Sudan’s Ministry of Interior launches passport and nationality registration in Jonglei

November 28, 2012 (BOR) – South Sudan’s ministry of interior directorate of migration, passport and nationality certificates launched registration in Bor, in a ceremony that received attendees from Juba’s ministry of interior, Jonglei state officials and civil servants, on Wednesday.

Director of nationality, passport and migration, Agustino Madut, while addressing the gathering in Bor on Wednesday, said they have decided to start the process of registration decentralization to the states in Jonglie because it is a historical town.

“We are here to launch the official start of the operation of the registration that will provide the citizens with national certificates, passports and other documents that the citizen may need in the future,” Madut explained.

“It is the first state that we have started with because Bor town is a historical town and their preparations were complete. We are not stopping in Bor town, we are going to other states, all ten states will be launched before the beginning of the New Year”, he continued.

He said his ministry is making sure that South Sudan’s citizens do not need to go to Juba for passports, national certificates and others documents, which previously entailed long waits, sometimes a week in lenth.

Madut said the process would continue until it reaches the counties and most remote areas like Kachipo, in eastern Jonglei.

The state deputy governor, Hussein Maar Nyuot says his government will provide the necessary assistance needed to facilitate the process and congratulated the ministry of interior for prioritising Jonglei as the first to be served.

He said the state government is ready to give any support necessary to the registration processes and “will be working hand in hand with the department and we will be there whenever they need us.”
