Police courts to be established as forces deployed for festive season

December 20, 2012 (JUBA) – South Sudan Police Service spokesman James Mondau Enok said at a press conference on Wednesday that the police courts are to be established and that they are fully prepared for this year’s Christmas celebrations throughout the country.

The extra police being deployed during the festive season will be monitored by “special forces”. Police believed to have committed crimes will face trial at courts specifically established in all of South Sudan’s ten states.

“Citizen who are celebrating this Christmas are protected” said Monday. He explained that every part of South Sudan is covered by its police forces. If citizens see any suspicious behaviour, he added, they can call police on the following numbers at any time of day:

Monday noted that “drunkenness, use of force on civilians and delays in attending to his duty” are sackable offences and that the courts will follow the Police Code of Conduct.

Last week, South Sudan police services began “Operation Build Confidence” by deploying more than 2,000 police to manage Christmas celebrations.

Abraham Manyuat, the Central Equatoria police commissioner said that “most important thing is community policing.” He urged citizen to provide information to police at the early stages of crimes.

He also called upon foreigners residing in South Sudan to obtain the requisite registration.
