Sudanese army retake Golo from Darfur rebels
December 30, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese army have retaken the control of an important area in Jebel Marra in Darfur after its seizure by the fighters of Sudan Liberation Movement – Abdel Wahid (SLM-AW) last week, defence minister told the parliament on Sunday.
SLM-AW rebels on Monday 24 December captured the western Darfur town of Golo, where they launched their rebellion and attacked the Sudanese army for the first time on 26 February 2003. The rebel group since said they captured two other positions in West and East Darfur states.
“The army carried out a tactical withdrawal” from Golo after the attack of the rebels, said Mohamed A-Hassan Al-Amin head of the defence and security committee at the National Assembly after being briefed by the defence minister Abdel-Rahim Hussein on Sunday.
He added that the minister told the parliamentary committee that Sudanese Armed Forces retook the control of Golo, adding that combing operations are taking place to track the remaining rebels in the area.
Hussein also denied rebel allegations that they inflected heavy causalities on the government troops, according to Al-Amin.
SLM-AW spokesperson Nimir Abdel rahman told Sudan tribune that they crashed the Sudanese force in the area and seized 15 vehicles as well and deposits of arms and ammunition.
The rebels also said they captured the deputy commissioner of the area.
On the same 24 December, the SLM-AW fighters said they attacked Taur, a location on the Nyala Zalengei road near Nertiti.
