Rumbek police ordered to deal with armed criminals

December 31, 2012 (RUMBEK) – The commissioner of Rumbek Central County
in South Sudan’s Lakes State, Abraham Mayen Kuc, has instructed the South Sudan Police Services (SSPS) to deal with suspected criminals in the area.

The instruction to the police was made on Radio Rumbek FM98, after a resident of the Amonhom section of the Dinka tribe was attacked by an unknown gunman in Pan-barkou village on Friday night.

No suspects have been arrested in the incident, which also left two people suffering from gunshot wounds. The Commissioner asked the police to deal with crime and anyone found carrying a gun.

Any civilians found with a firearm who is neither a member of the military nor a policeman will be subject to the the law, commissioner Mayen stressed.

A disarmament campaign in Lakes State’s eight counties took place in 2011. Cattle herding groups who used to carry small arms to protect themselves from raiders now rely on the government for security.
