Jonglei jazz band performs for peace and development
January 4, 2013 (BOR) – South Sudan’s next generation of artists, such as the Pigi United Jazz Band, are trying to build a collective national identity and spread peace in the young nation, through the positive messages in the music.
The band plans to perform in Jonglei State capital, Bor on Saturday to promote “comprehensive peace“ across the troubled state, which has suffered from insecurity from inter-communal raids and a localised rebellion since South Sudan’s independence.
On Thursday evening, the jazz band performed at the Garden Resort Hotel in Bor, with most of the songs promoting prosperity, development and peace among Jonglei’s population.
Speaking at a ceremony at Bor Resort on Wednesday, the speaker of the Jonglei State assembly, Peter Chol Wall, said the government is working to restore peace in Pigi County, between the Atar and Khorfulus communities.
“There must be peace among the people of this state. There was long-term conflict among the people of Pigi since 2005, but the government, through [the] Jonglei Legislative Assembly has brought peace to the people there”, he said.
He acknowledged that peace promotion in the state is an important factor in the development of Jonglei.
“We are independent nation, and we cannot develop without peace”, said Wall.
