Libya offers to help resolve Darfur crisis

KHARTOUM, July 1 (AFP) — Libya has offered their country’s help to end the humanitarian crisis and restore stability in Sudan’s war-torn western region of Darfur, a newspaper reported Thursday.

Al-Rai Al-Aam said Colonel Moamer Kadhafi’s envoy Abubakr Younis Jabir, in Khartoum for celebrations for the 15th anniversary of Omar al-Beshir’s seizure of power in a coup, delivered the offer in talks with the president Wednesday.

“My country is prepared to offer every assistance and support for resolving the Darfur problem,” Jabir said, quoted by the independent daily.

Libyan Foreign Minister Abdel Rahman Shalgham also discussed Darfur with his Sudanese counterpart Mustafa Ismail here the same day, newspapers said.

Ismail said in the meeting that Khartoum was seeking a political solution to the Darfur crisis through a comprehensive conference as proposed by Beshir, according to the reports.

Libya wants to help restore stability in Darfur, the Libyan minister said.

At least 10,000 people have been killed in Darfur since fighting broke out in February 2003, when black African rebel groups rose up against the Arab and Muslim government in Khartoum.
