Nyala hospital faces shortage of doctors and technicians
January 31, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The General Manager of Nyala Hospital Omer Yacoub has complained about the lack of qualified personnel and necessary equipment in South Darfur’s largest health centre.
He denied that the deteriorating working conditions are caused by mismanagement and demanded the state government to pay more attention to the needs of hospital.
Omer told reporters in Nyala on Wednesday that the working conditions in the hospital, despite its capacities and large number of patients admitted, remain so bad due to the acute shortage of health workers, specialists, equipments and laboratories.
He pointed out that the number of specialists and doctors at the hospital is less than those who work in a small health unit in Khartoum.
The director said that Nyala Hospital needs to specialists and technicians in anaesthesia, orthopaedic surgery, internal medicine, surgery neurosurgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology.
He revealed that the hospital’s debts skyrocketed and reached more than SDG1m ($0.23m), adding that specialists and doctors dues are six months in arrears on top of outstanding electricity, water and housing allowance bills.
Omer said the operating budget is not sufficient despite the transfer of SDG500,000 by the federal finance ministry to the state government to pay some hospital’s debts SDG400,000.
The director further explained that Nyala Hospital continues to suffer from poor sanitation.
