The leaders of the six militia groups covered by the amnesty were, Major General David Yau Yau, Major General Munto Abdahala Munto, Major General Johnson Olwin, Major General Bapiny Monytuil Wicjang, Major General Oyuog Ogot and Major General Gordon Kong.

Signed by the president, the decree granted pardons to both the leaders of rebel groups and the men serving under them.

Kiir had previously issued an amnesty to South Sudanese rebels ahead of the country’s independence from Sudan in 2011.

Some rebels leaders, such as David Yau Yau in Jonglei, eventually accepted Kiir’s offer but later rebelled again.
