Khartoum and Juba hold talks on bilateral trade
May 15, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The governments of Sudan and South Sudan have signed in Khartoum today the commerce minutes on trade activation cooperation between the two countries yesterday.
The record is comprised of ten items including regulation of commerce between the two countries, encouragement of businessmen, activation the laws, movement of goods and people, commercial missions, preferential trade , banking and insurance, factories and commodities, commercial points, and the settlement of disputes.
In September of last year, the two ex-foes signed a series of cooperation agreements which covered oil, citizenship rights, security issues, banking, and border trade among others.
After several months of an apparent setback, the two countries signed an implementation matrix last March for these cooperation agreements.
Sudan’s minister of trade, Osman Omer al-Sharif, said that the signing of this record is the first step towards executing the trade agreement which was signed last year, expressing commitment to follow up implementation of the remaining items and to speed up establishment of trade points with South Sudan.
Al-Sharif further pledged to help businessmen fulfill their tasks and carry out trade and investment between the two countries.
South Sudan’s undersecretary for trade, industry, and investment, Kiqin Jakour Peu, for his part, stressed his ministry’s commitment to the implementation of the agreement and said that 2011 separation of Sudan will be a source of strength and attraction between the two countries.
He noted that trade between the people has begun, but movement of people and commodities needs to be facilitated officially in accordance with the laws.
