Gunman kills aid worker in Lakes state

May 25, 2013 (JUBA) – An aid worker was on Thursday killed and another injured by an unknown gunman in South Sudan’s Lakes state.

lakes1-9.jpgThe deceased, state authorities told Sudan Tribune, worked with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

The attacker, a senior security officer said, stormed Makuriric residential area in Rumbek Central County, and opened fire on the house where the deceased lived.

“One person called Charles Lodu from Eastern Equatoria who works with WFP was shot in the stomach in Makuriric and was taken to Juba from where he died,” said the officer, who asked not to be named.

Another person, he added, sustained injuries after he was shot on the thigh.
“These are criminals who have not yet been identified,” he stressed.

In recent weeks, attacks on aid workers have been a common occurrence in the new nation, with calls for government to step up measures to halt the practice.

The medical charity group, MSF recently accused armed men of looting their stores and properties in Jonglei state.This is the sixth time an MSF medical facility has been looted or damaged in the region over the past two years.
