Indian Battalion commemorates international UN peacekeepers’ day in Bor
May 29, 2013 (BOR) – Peacekeepers from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan marked UN peacekeeping day in Bor, Jonglei state, by paying tribute to their comrades who died in a rebel attack in April.
Five Indian UN peacekeepers were killed in an ambushed by a group of around 200-armed men, suspected to be part of a rebellion, in Gumuruk village.
“As keeping with the tradition and purpose of the day, a solemn ceremony was organized by paying homage to the martyrs who have made supreme sacrifice for the cause of peace and universal brotherhood”, Lt Col. Shiba Mishra from Indian army said on Wednesday.
He said “the Indian battalion deployed in the strife torn state of Jonglei marked the International Peacekeepers’ Day in a somber fashion by paying floral tributes to their fallen comrades at Bor”.
Seven other UN staff were also killed in the attack.
“The wreath laying ceremony was followed by planting of saplings, in the memory of fallen comrades who laid down their lives in the line of their duty on 9 April this year, by the officers and men of Indian battalion 2”, he said.
