A well-placed source said the committee handed over the final report to the presidency on Friday; six weeks after President Salva Kiir issued a decree on the formation of the four-member body.

Hundreds of thousands of combined US dollars and South Sudanese pounds, sometimes reported in millions, were stolen from the office of the president in mysterious circumstances.

Three top administrators were consequently suspended over the loss, which occurred on March 15th and 23rd, according to a statement released by president’s office.

A sources familiar with the probe told Sudan Tribune that not much was uncovered by the committee throughout the investigation, citing unending conflict of interests.

“There was a lot of interference during the investigation process. As such, the investigation committee was not able to find out how much money went missing, other than the small amounts we already know about,” the sources, who preferred anonymity, told Sudan Tribune.

The committee, which was headed by the country’s anti-graft chairperson, Justice John Gatwich Lul, was tasked to identify, summon, interview and investigate all the concerned members of the staff involved.

“All the relevant documents in the office of the president will be audited by the investigation committee,” the president’s decree read in part.

The four-member body was among others, asked to investigate why such an amount of money was kept in the office building and not in the bank and how it was stolen despite the heavy security in and around the president office.

It however remains unclear whether the investigation team recommended any further legal actions against the culprits, as required by the presidential order.
