Jonglei: Bor community disputes alleged criticism against SPLM politicians
June 10, 2013 (BOR) – The leadership of the Bor community has dismissed their involvement in the criticism against politicians from South Sudan’s ruling party over the contest for party chairmanship and their intentions to become president.
Reacting to a statement claiming to represent the thoughts of the Greater Bor Community, warning SPLM political figures against prematurely putting themselves forward.
The name, Greater Bor, encompasses three Dinka Bor communities of Bor, Twic East and Duk counties, formerly called Bor district during the time of British colonial government. But members of the Dinka Bor community in Bor County told Sudan Tribune on Monday that the document did not originate from them.
The body called The Greater Bor was formed back in 1990s during the time of civil war between Sudan and South Sudan. Majok Ayuen, was the first chairperson until he was replaced by the current minister of parliamentary affairs in the government of South Sudan, Makuei Lueth in 2003.
In their press released dated 7 June, issued to Sudan Tribune on 10th May, the community of Bor County rejected their participation in the document released last week, calling it a fabrication by individuals who may or not be members of their community.
“It has nothing to do with Bor Community and therefore it must be regarded as work of Utopia”, read part of Bor community press release, which added that the “Bor community has no direct obligation to decide for the SPLM political party since it has no political mandate to debate on what is happening within the SPLM political party in the Republic”.
In a separate interview with the Sudan Tribune, Bor county youth leader, Thon Ayuen said the individuals who wrote the statement were not recognised by the Dinka Bor community. Those responsible will be arrested and taken to court if caught, he said.
According to Ayuen, the community leaders of the three communities of Bor Twic East and Duk, Porfessor Ajuoi Magot, Mr. Dau Aleer and Brig.Deng Awuol, respectively, and the chairperson of Greater Bor Community, Makuei Lueth, don’t have any knowledge about the group that issued the statement last week.
