June 13, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan is discussing proposals filed by the head of the African Union High-level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), former President Thabo Mbeki to settle current tensions with Juba over alleged support to rebel groups, foreign ministry spokesperson said, on Thursday.

“The government is considering the proposals made by President Thabo Mbeki, the chairmen of the African Union mechanism, aiming to end the current situation in the relations between Sudan and South Sudan”, said Abu Bakr Siddiq Al-Amin.

The African Union peace and security commissioner, Ramtane Lamamra, disclosed on Wednesday that Mbeki had extended “urgent proposal” to presidents Omer Al-Bashir and Salva Kiir in order to resolve “some crucial implementation issues”.

Bashir last week accused Juba of continuing its support to the Sudanese rebels and said he would not continue to allow flow of the South Sudanese oil because its money would be used to fund rebels activities . he also emphasised that the security arrangements should be fully implemented .

The two parties agreed to form a joint committee to decide on claims of support to rebel groups but it did not meet yet.

Al-Amin said that the international community is convinced that South Sudanese government is still offering all kinds of support to the rebel groups.

“Much of organisations and governments in and out the region have detailed information from their own sources on the elements of this support which increased during the last two months”, he added.

The diplomat said there are attempts by the international community to settle the current situation through proposing mechanisms ensuring the implementation of the cooperation agreements as one package and in an integrated manner, in line with the matrix of implementation signed last March.
