Former LJM rebels to implement security arrangements
June 28, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) led by Tijani El-Sissi will start soon the implementation of a security arrangements deal reached with the Sudanese government after the endorsement of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.
El-Sissi who signed a peace agreement with the Sudanese government on 14 July 2011, told the Sudanese Media Centre on Friday that they will hold a meeting with the Darfur peacekeeping mission UNAMID which chairs the Cease Fire Commission (CFC).
He said that the parties during the forthcoming meeting will sign an implementation matrix negotiated during the past months to enforce these security arrangements and to complete it as soon as possible.
The CFC which includes UNAMID, Qatar , LJM and Sudanese government is tasked with the monitoring violations of the ceasefire and support of the disarmament of former rebels.
The process was delayed by many reasons. First it was UNAMID which had been accused of delaying the implementation; then Sudanese army and the former rebel group diverged over the number of combatants who can be involved in the process.
Sudanese army said many of the people gathered in the assembly points were not real fighters. However, the presidency directed to soften the criteria the army used in the selection process.
