Man killed near Lakes state parliament in Rumbek
July 11, 2013 (RUMBEK) – Gunmen killed a 32-year-old man, Rakon Mayek, in Rumbek Central county on Thursday near to the Lakes state legislative assembly. Police are yet to apprehend any suspects.
An eyewitness told Sudan Tribune that Rakon Mayek was with his wife when he was shot and killed on the spot.
The woman was unable to identify who killed her husband and has been admitted to Rumbek hospital, where she is being treated for shock.
The reason behind the shooting is unknown. The Lakes state government has not commented on the issue.
Lakes state’s elected governor was sacked by South Sudan’s president in January after a series of cattle raids and violence between ethnic groups.
The new caretaker governor has introduced tough security measures that have proven controversial among much of the population, many of whom accuse the military of human rights abuses.
