Lakes: Student killed over girl’s pregnancy
July 13, 2013 (RUMBEK) – A 19-year-old student from Cueibet county in South Sudan’s Lakes state was on Friday beaten to death by a group of men who accused his relative of impregnating a young girl, local officials said.
Deng Guet Deng, who hailed from the Pagok sub-section of Gok Dinka, had travelled back to his home town to visit the family after a school break, only to be ambushed by armed men with sticks at about 10:00am.
Isaac Mayom Malek, the Cueibet County commissioner told Sudan Tribune that state authorities have apprehended all those involved in the killing.
The commissioner described the deceased; a primary eight student as a faithful lad who often returned to home on weekends to visit his mother and help her on the farm.
“I have arrested two men who participated in beating student Guet to death. I have also arrested that girl who was impregnated [together] with her husband,” Malek said.
He said those responsible will face the full force of law, clarifying that Guet was not guilty of having an affair with the women, but just happened to be related to the person who made the young girl conceive.
“This is a very shocking tragic incident for the first time in Cueibet history. I try my level best with my administrator to lower tension which was rising between Pagor section and Kong-ngor section and I have assured them that government will speedily undertake legal measures [so that the] lead suspect appears before court,” the commissioner told Sudan Tribune.
“It was bad to see the dead boy. The late Guet was wearing his school uniform lying on group before he was being taken to hospital whereby he died later for severe wounds,” the commissioner said.
Lakes state is currently under harsh security reforms ever since South Sudan President Salva Kiir removed its elected governor, Chol Tong Mayay and replaced him with a military caretaker, Matur Chut Duol.
Dhuol has introduced a number of controversial measures, including creating three secret military prisons in Langcok, Pulkuc and Ajakangau (Ngangtika). Despite all these harsh measures, however, insecurity has continued and cattle raiding between Lakes and Unity states have continued.
CYCLE OF REVENGE
On Wednesday, a group of armed men believed to have carried out a revenge killing inside Rumbek Central County, killed one person between Project Development Center (PDU) and Lakes state assembly premises.
