Egypt denies authorising an SPLM-N office in Cairo
July 26, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – An official source at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry has dismissed media reports about his government’s approval for official representation of the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement/North (SPLM/N) in Cairo as untrue.
The unnamed source quoted on local Egyptian state media stressed that what has been published in this regard is totally false.
Last Sunday, Sudan’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Abubakr Al-Sideeg, announced his country’s objection to opening an SPLA/M office in Cairo, saying that it would threaten the Sudanese-Egyptian relations.
He said in press statements to pro-government Al-Sudani daily newspaper that the Sudanese foreign ministry plans to conduct a dialogue with the new Egyptian government to clarify the risks of opening an office for the SPLM/N in Cairo.
The spokesperson further pointed that Khartoum will officially inform the Egyptian government of its objection to the move when it verifies information in this regard.
“We had contacts on this issue with previous governments, and we will continue to address it with the new government because we are convinced that they wish to establish good relations with Sudan”, he added
Al-Sudani newspaper had previously reported that the SPLA/N has officially opened its office in Cairo last Thursday, launching a series of public lectures which were attended by Sudanese and Egyptian politicians.
