UN registers the displaced in Jonglei’s Pibor county

July 30, 2013 (GENEVA) – The United Nations has said it is necessary for aid agencies to register persons displaced by conflict in Jonglei state’s Pibor county in order for humanitarian organisations to determine their needs and the full scale of the displacement.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Gaelle Sevenier of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said since gaining access to areas affected by conflict in Jonglei, IOM has registered 3,000 households in Dorien.

“Aid agencies need this registration to verify the full scale of displacement and identify vulnerable families scattered in remote areas, who were likely to be in urgent need of assistance”, said Sevenier.

She said that data collected during the registration process has been shared with humanitarian organisations and will be helpful in getting aid to victims of the conflict in Jonglei.

“The data gathered was being shared with the humanitarian community to contribute to more efficient delivery of aid, including emergency healthcare, food and non-food relief items”, she said.

The identified households have received items such as plastic sheets, blankets, mosquito nets, food, soap, buckets and jerrycans. The deliveries were made by air.

Earlier this month, Toby Lanzer, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator for South Sudan, reported that aid agencies had for the first time this year gained access to parts of the troubled state previously off-limits

Jonglei state has been in the limelight over cattle raids, tribal retaliatory attacks between the Lou Nuer and Murle, as well as violence resulting from fighting between the South Sudan army (SPLA) and rebels led by David Yau Yau.
