Lakes: Wulu authorities restart search for banned alcohol

August 17, 2013 (RUMBEK) – Authorities in Wulu county of Lakes state, which has banned alcohol since June, ordered a surprised search for alcohol within Wulu county’s residential areas on Thursday.

The five-hour-search, carried out by a joint operation by police and security agents, resulted in different types of alcoholic drinks being confiscated from a house in the Hai-Jabel area.

Two jerrycans of shiko, a local brew made from honey, one jerrycan of duomo, which is also made of honey, and one jerrycan of white brew known as mau-hier.

Lakes state’s military caretaker governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol ordered the alcohol ban across the state’s eight counties in June in one of his many moves to reduce insecurity in the state since he was appointed in January.

Many women in Lakes state brew alcohol as their livelihood and have complained that the decision had left them struggling to support their families.

Another resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said senior government officials have several connections with big hotels to sell their beer, while at the same time local communities are denied permission to sell their beer or local brew.
